| Betamax was way better than VHS, but VHS was cheaper and the porn industry went with VHS over Betamax to keep it's cost down, porn is usually the trend setter when it comes to home entertainment, most major US porn studios decided to go with blu-ray over HDDVD and look which one won | |

Havn't been able to find it....only apple so far wankers. (Apple that is)
get an Iphone...simples! No. They are shit. simples. Can't remember a shit product that monopolised a market before.... Really?
I can name numerous products that were not the best of their kind, but became the norm...
Microsoft anyone? What was better? Amstrad? Do me a favour, love.
There are numurous word packages better than Word and numerous spreadsheets better than Excel. They became the norm because Microsoft got them installed on all PCs. Lotus notes was far superior and far less memory intensive.
Numerous o/s are better than windows. Including Unix and Linux.
Internet Explorer is not a patch on firefox.
Microsoft don't even test their products before releasing them.
Do I really need to go on?
Microsoft are shit.
Also betamax was better than VHS. And I'm going to take this as gospel from some random old cunt on the internet over market consensus.... Bollocks. Something as successful as Microsoft doesn't just fluke it's way to total monopolisation. Anyone in IT or a decent knowledge of IT would probably agree with me.
For fucks sakes, they used to have a flight simulator in excel. It is no longer an issue, but the amount of memory these products use is ridiculous. Type in Bill Gates and do a thesaurus check in word. Used to come back with some great choices from disgruntled coders who knew the product they were making was shit.
Word and Excel became the number 1 because they were marketed better than anything else. They then became the norm because if you wanted to send a word doc to a customer they also needed MS word. Because of that everyone used it and it became the industry standard.
This is common fucking knowledge Obvious. It's not really that debatable. Talking about the iPhone is debatable and is a lot to do with opinions. However, most people who have iPhones have them because they are 'trendy', not because of their functionality or the quality of the processor and o/s.
It's all about marketing. I can't argue too much because I don't have an extensive knowledge of IT. Marketing is a huge thing, I agree, however I can't see how something like Microsoft, the most protiable organisation ever to be created can be as shit as you say it is, or that other products were THAT much better.

Haha, maybe in your world yeah. In anyones World this is true. OK - A fair bit before your time, but betamax was better. VHS became the norm though because of what Admin said and various other factors.

It is all marketing, but they also did some very good things, like Windows, which made things easier for simpletons (or the average computer user). I'm not saying that they are shit, just that they were not the best product on the market. But, they became the industry standard. E.G. Excel is a very good spreadsheet package. But, most accountants don't use it. Why? Because there are better products. However, more people use Excel than other spreadsheet offerings, even though they have to pay for it and pay quite a lot.

Because it has no competition....Apple are their closest and their machines are geared towards, music, graphics and design and basically cost 4 times than of a MS operating system. Linux was an option but couldn't compete with MS maney

There can be sub-products of a much larger market which allow other companies to specialise in, such as Sage and Databases etc... Still comes under IT, in which Microsoft still totally dominate. Just because Word or Excel aren't necessarily the best in specialist fields doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't the best for, like you say, your average computer user. At the end of the day, that's where they've made the money, for making the best product for the masses, not the specialists.

If you were to buy a car, you'd look around. You might look online to get some reviews. You might look at how economical it was. You'd compare performance and price. Have you ever bought a PC or laptop? Did you pay money to get MS office on the machine, or did the price include these licenses? What other operating systems did you look at? What other word packages did you look at? Why?

Like it or not, the iPhone is doing something right, as it has completely dominated the mobile phone market. Blackberry are the closest to it, and they've been making smart phones for years. Actually mate, Android phones have been out selling the iPhone since May. In the US alone 27% of smartphone users have an android device compared to the 23% of iPhone. In August 2010 android sales had incred 886% from one year previous.

Something like a Ford Focus would be an equivalent because it's geared toward the masses. Whereas your Ferrari's are geared toward your 'specialists' - if you like. It's a unique argument, because no other company in any other market has dominated quite like Microsoft has. But I understand your point, for a person with extensive knowledge of IT, they may well shop around more so than your average Dad looking to buy a family laptop or computer.

Also, this is how the convo started. Dominating the market isn't the same as having the best product. Many products don't even get onto the market for various reasons, even though they are better than the market leader.

I still maintain that the best product for the suited audience will always be the market leader. Use Google Chrome at home, easily the best browser. Have been swayed by HTC, but will probably stick with Apple. Probably the first discussion on here that hasn't descended into trading insults.

Probably the first discussion on here that hasn't descended into trading insults. It's a decent argument. You seem like a person who follows the market trend. I can't remember the graph that I did at Uni, but has something to do with innovators, early adopters, followers, late adopters etc. to determine buying patterns. Most people (myself included) will generally follow the trend that is being set by the innovators and early adopters. You probably use Google chrome because it is the favourite at the moment. Have you looked at other browsers to compare memory and performance? Probably not, most people don't. I only know about other browsers because part of my job involves web programming and I need to ensure that it is compatible with other browsers. Firefox is generally believed to be the best.

Have you ever bought a PC or laptop? Did you pay money to get MS office on the machine, or did the price include these licenses? What other operating systems did you look at? What other word packages did you look at? Why? But the car example isn't necessarily a like for like comparison because you have shitloads of different companies, purposes, and prices.
Agreed. But try out Firefox at home instead of IE. You'll see the difference.

Cant stand firefox here in the office, cunts usually install 101 different add on's for it and when one gets fucked it's my job to trail through them all looking for it.

Yes and no, in an office enviroment, I prefer IE as there is less, people can do to fuck it up.
